No Surprises Act

The No Surprises Act, which is part of the Consolidated Appropriations Act of 2021, is designed to protect clients from receiving unexpected medical bills.

 

The Good Faith Estimate provision of the No Surprises Act went into effect on January 1, 2022 and is designed to give clients an estimate of how much they’ll be charged for the healthcare services they’ll be receiving, prior to their first appointment. 

 

Things to know:
 
  • You have the right to receive a Good Faith Estimate for the total expected cost of any non-emergency items or services.

  • Throughout your treatment, the provider may recommend additional items or services as part of your treatment that are not reflected in this estimate. These would need to be scheduled separately with your consent and the understanding that any additional service costs are in addition to the original Good Faith Estimate.

  • Make sure your health care provider gives you a Good Faith Estimate in writing at least 1 business day before your medical service or item. You can also ask your healthcare provider, and any other provider you choose, for a Good Faith Estimate before you schedule an item or service.

  • If you receive a bill that is at least $400 more than your Good Faith Estimate, you can dispute the bill.

  • Make sure to save a copy or picture of your Good Faith Estimate. This document will be available in your SimplePractice client portal.
